Skipping Christmas

Imagine a year without Christmas. No crowded malls, no corny office parties, no fruitcakes, no unwanted presents. That’s just what Luther and Nora Krank have in mind when they decide that, just this once, they’ll skip the holiday altogether. Theirs will be the only house on Hemlock Street without a rooftop Frosty, they won’t be hosting their annual Christmas Eve bash, they aren’t even going to have a tree. They won’t need one, because come December 25 they’re setting sail on a Caribbean cruise. But as this weary couple is about to discover, skipping Christmas brings enormous consequences—and isn’t half as easy as they’d imagined.

A classic tale for modern times, Skipping Christmas offers a hilarious look at the chaos and frenzy that have become part of our holiday tradition.

Krampus Sticker Book

A large-format sticker book full of Krampus stickers. 72 removable stickers to delight good children and frighten the bad ones. At Christmastime, St. Nicholas rewards children who've been good all year-but those who have behaved badly are visited by the Krampus! The images are pulled from vintage, pre-WWI Krampus postcards.

The Elf Off the Shelf: A Christmas Tradition Gone Bad

"I honestly did believe this shelf gig was going to be great. 'Get out and see the world, ' they said. 'Experience the joy of wide-eyed kids, holiday cheer, and the Christmas spirit, ' they promised. 'Finally leave your parents' basement for once in two hundred and sixty-seven years, ' they told me. I was sold.
And off I went. As a member of Santa's spy squad, I headed down south for the holidays to help the big guy decide who's naughty and who's nice. It was going to be a wonderful change of pace from the screwing, hammering, sanding, painting, and wrapping happening in Ol' St. Nick's workshop.
Or so I thought . . ." Horace the Elf
In this for-parent's-eyes-only parody of the popular holiday title, "The Elf on the Shelf," readers laugh along with Horace as he goes AWOL from his Christmas duties. This photo-story set to verse is the unauthorized (and hilarious) tale of one disgruntled little helper with a gift for making mischief.

The Cinderella Murder: An Under Suspicion Novel

In a first-time collaboration, "Queen of Suspense" Mary Higgins Clark partners with bestselling author Alafair Burke to deliver a brand new suspense series about a television program featuring cold case murders.
Television producer Laurie Moran is delighted when the pilot for her reality drama, "Under Suspicion," is a success. Even more, the program--a cold case series that revisits unsolved crimes by recreating them with those affected--is off to a fantastic start when it helps solve an infamous murder in the very first episode.
Now Laurie has the ideal case to feature in the next episode of "Under Suspicion" the Cinderella Murder. When Susan Dempsey, a beautiful and multi-talented UCLA student, was found dead, her murder raised numerous questions. Why was her car parked miles from her body? Had she ever shown up for the acting audition she was due to attend at the home of an up-and-coming director? Why does Susan's boyfriend want to avoid questions about their relationship? Was her disappearance connected to a controversial church that was active on campus? Was she close to her computer science professor because of her technological brilliance, or something more? And why was Susan missing one of her shoes when her body was discovered?
With the help of lawyer and "Under Suspicion" host Alex Buckley, Laurie knows the case will attract great ratings, especially when the former suspects include Hollywood's elite and tech billionaires. The suspense and drama are perfect for the silver screen--but is Cinderella's murderer ready for a close-up?
Together Mary Higgins Clark and Alafair Burke deliver an exciting publishing event: the start of a thrilling new series guaranteed to keep you guessing until the last suspenseful page.

The Lost Colonies of Ancient America

"The question is no longer 'Who discovered America?' Thanks to Frank Joseph, the question is now, 'Who didn't discover America?'"
--David Goudsward, author, Ancient Stone Sites of New England and the Debate Over Early European Exploration
"Here is the history of ancient America you were never taught at school. Frank Joseph, drawing on decades of meticulous research and exploration, has uncovered the evidence that rewrites the history books. A vital addition to the library of anyone seeking knowledge of America's forgotten past."
--David Jones, editor, New Dawn Magazine
The Original Visitors to the New World Revealed
Was America truly unknown to the outside world until Christopher Columbus "discovered" it in 1492? Could a people gifted enough to raise the Great Pyramid more than 4,000 years ago have lacked the skills necessary to build a ship capable of crossing the Atlantic? Did the Phoenicians, who circumnavigated the African continent in 600 bc, never consider sailing farther? Were the Vikings, the most fearless warriors and seafarers of all time, terrified at the prospect of a transoceanic voyage?
If so, how are we to account for an Egyptian temple accidentally unearthed by Tennessee Valley Authority workers in 1935? What is a beautifully crafted metal plate with the image of a Phoenician woman doing in the Utah desert? And who can explain the discovery of Viking houses and wharves excavated outside of Boston?
These enigmas are but a tiny fraction of the abundant physical proof for Old World visitors to our continent hundreds and thousands of years ago. In addition, Sumerians, Minoans, Romans, Celts, ancient Hebrews, Indonesians, Africans, Chinese, Japanese, Welsh, Irish, and the Knights Templar all made their indelible, if neglected, mark on our land.

From My Shelf Books is having a HUGE cookbook sale. Every book in our cookbook section is on sale from November 1st to November 15. Everyone save 20% off any cookbook new or used, and if you are a member, you get 30% off!

Save on such great books like 500 Low-Carb Recipes: 500 Recipes, from Snacks to Dessert, That the Whole Family Will Love Low-fat or low-carb? A recent New York Times Magazine (July 7, 2002) cover story answered this question and said that Dr. Atkins was right all along, "its not fat that makes us fat but carbohydrates." Though the government has spent hundreds of millions of dollars in research trying to prove that fat is the cause of obesity, there has been a subtle shift in the scientific consensus over the past five years supporting what the low-carb diet doctors have been saying all along: if we eat less carbohydrates, we will lose weight and live longer.

One of the toughest challenges of any diet is having enough variety and choices to keep the dieter from losing interest. The most common reason that people abandon their diet is boredom but 500 LOW CARB RECIPES: 500 Recipes, From Snacks to Dessert, That the Whole Family Will Love by Dana Carpender has more than enough recipes to keep even the most finicky dieter on track.
With recipes for everything including hors dÆoeuvres, snacks, breads, muffins, side dishes, entrees, cookies, cakes and much more, this is an endless supply for creating meals for the whole family night after night. Whether everyone in the family is on a diet or not, these recipes are proven winners with adults and kids alike.

Also included:
Many one-dish meals for single people--main dish salads, skillet suppers that include meat and vegetables, and hearty soups that are a full meal in a bowl.

Ideas for breaking out of old ways of looking at food with suggestions that save time and money and change what is considered a normal meal for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Information about where to find low-carbohydrate specialty products and descriptions of low-carb specialty foods found in grocery stores everywhere.

An entire chapter that lists and describes low-carb substitute ingredients such as fats and oils, flour substitutes, liquids, seasonings and sweeteners.

Dieters will be pleased to know that they can eat foods like guacamole, omelets, pizza, steak, ham and dessert without giving up great taste and still lose weight. There are enough recipes to create the perfect menu for any holiday of the year--including Thanksgiving. Each of the 500 recipes includes a carbohydrate count to help calculate the total carb intake of each menu.

There are more recipes for main dishes and side dishes than most low-carb dieters will ever be able to eat--everything from down-home cooking to ethnic fare; from quick-and-easy weeknight meals to knock-their-socks off party food. 500 LOW CARB RECIPES is the last cookbook any dieter will ever need to buy and certain to be used until the binding is worn out!

Deane Center for the Performing Arts

The face of Wellsboro keeps changing, but it's not always a bad thing. I remember Davis Furniture, my uncle worked there for a period of time. It was a good store, but it closed. The building was mostly vacant for a long time, and that's never good for a town. Luckily the Deane Center came into existence.

The building was purchased with a donation and with other fundraising efforts, the Deane Center for the Performing Arts came into being. The Deane Center's mission is to provide a venue for the arts, both community and professional to rehearse and deliver performances that are educational and entertaining. The goal is affordable performances for the area. I took my dad to a Johnny Cash impersonator last December, and he loved it.

There are also music practice/music lesson rooms. From My Shelf Books Vs. The Evil Empire used one of these rooms for the premier of the webseries. It was free to use with a reservation and very much appreciated. There are also several large reception rooms and a board room available for meeting space at reasonable rental rates.

From My Shelf Books recently hosted Jay Paterno, the son of Joe Paterno. It was our first book event that was so big that we couldn't hold it in the bookstore. Luckily, there was the Deane Center. We were going to hold it in the lobby, but it was so big that we needed the Coolidge theatre.

It was a reasonable rate to rent, and we would never have been able to hold as many people as we did without it. It's my hope that we will be able to draw other authors, writers, and public figures in the future, but the thing is, you can too. The Deane Center is there for the public to use, and you are really only limited by your imagination.

Here's to the Deane Center and Tioga County bringing lots of interesting events that are both entertaining and educational to the area.

Peter and the Starcatchers

Peter and the Starcatchers is our December pick for our teen book club. Our teen book club is free for area teens. Teens pick up the book at the store, and once we meet and discus the book, they return it and can receive the next months book. We then sell the used books to help fund the club, or for three dollars, the teen can keep the book.

We also get by with donations from our community and friends of the store and teens in other areas. Our friend Barry in Ohio paid for one of next months books. We also have pizza and drinks, and often an area business donates this. If you are interested, contact us. We'll let everyone know of your generosity on our Facebook page.

You can donate by clicking on the photo or drop by and donate, or next time you come into the store, just drop your change in our jar...

Don't even think of starting this book unless you're sitting in a comfortable chair and have lots of time. A fast-paced, impossible-to-put-down adventure awaits as the young orphan Peter and his mates are dispatched to an island ruled by the evil King Zarboff. They set sail aboard the Never Land, a ship carrying a precious and mysterious trunk inits cargo hold, and the journey quickly becomes fraught with excitement and danger.

Discover richly developed characters in the sweet but sophisticated Molly, the scary but familiar Black Stache, and the fearless Peter. Treacherous battles with pirates, foreboding thunderstorms at sea, and evocative writing immerses the reader in a story that slowly and finally reveals the secrets and mysteries of the beloved Peter Pan.

Iron Horses: America's Race to Bring the Railroads West

A vivid account of the origins of the transcontinental railroad -- available for the first time in trade paperback -- by the author of the bestselling The Admirals: "Borneman is masterly at writing seamless narrative." -- Douglas Brinkley, author of The Wilderness Warrior

After the completion of the first transcontinental railroad in 1869, the rest of the United States was up for grabs, and the race was on. The prize: a better, shorter, less snowy route through the American Southwest, linking Los Angeles to Chicago.

In IRON HORSES, Borneman recounts the rivalries, contested routes, political posturing, and business dealings that unfolded as an increasing number of lines pushed their way across the country.

Borneman brings to life the legendary robber barons behind it all and also captures the herculean efforts required to construct these roads -- the laborers who did the back-breaking work, the brakemen who ran atop moving cars, the tracklayers crushed and killed by runaway trains. From backroom deals in Washington, DC, to armed robberies of trains in the wild deserts, from cattle cars to streamliners and Super Chiefs, all the great incidents and innovations of a mighty American era are made vivid in IRON HORSES.

That the Blood Stay Pure: African Americans, Native Americans, and the Predicament of Race and Identity in Virginia

That the Blood Stay Pure traces the history and legacy of the commonwealth of Virginia s effort to maintain racial purity and its impact on the relations between African Americans and Native Americans. Arica L. Coleman tells the story of Virginia s racial purity campaign from the perspective of those who were disavowed or expelled from tribal communities due to their affiliation with people of African descent or because their physical attributes linked them to those of African ancestry. Coleman also explores the social consequences of the racial purity ethos for tribal communities that have refused to define Indian identity based on a denial of blackness. This rich interdisciplinary history, which includes contemporary case studies, addresses a neglected aspect of America s long struggle with race and identity."

For Love of Country

A celebration of the extraordinary courage, dedication, and sacrifice of this generation of American veterans on the battlefield and their equally valuable contributions on the home front.
Because so few of us now serve in the military, our men and women in uniform have become strangers to us. We stand up at athletic events to honor them, but we hardly know their true measure. Here, Starbucks CEO and longtime veterans’ advocate Howard Schultz and National Book Award finalist Rajiv Chandrasekaran of The Washington Post offer an enlightening, inspiring corrective.
The authors honor acts of uncommon valor in Iraq and Afghanistan, including an Army sergeant who repeatedly runs through a storm of gunfire to save the lives of his wounded comrades; two Marines who sacrifice their lives to halt an oncoming truck bomb and protect thirty-three of their brothers in arms; a sixty-year-old doctor who joins the Navy to honor his fallen son.
We also see how veterans make vital contributions once they return home, drawing on their leadership skills and commitment to service: former soldiers who aid residents in rebuilding after natural disasters; a former infantry officer who trades in a Pentagon job to teach in an inner-city neighborhood; a retired general leading efforts to improve treatments for brain-injured troops; the spouse of a severely injured soldier assisting families in similar positions.
These powerful, unforgettable stories demonstrate just how indebted we are to those who protect us and what they have to offer our nation when their military service is done.
